| Mountain Vacations Show a Growing Trend in Popularity: While North Americans are confronted with a wide variety of options when it comes to vacation destinations these days, evidence shows that mountain resort vacations are on the rise. While vacation destinations like cityscapes and beach front resorts are still highly popular tourist spots, it seems that mountain vacations are amongst the fastest growing travel trends in North America. It’s not difficult to understand why excursions to the mountains are on the rise though. Peter Fallow of TravelWatch claims it has a lot to do with increasingly crowded and smog-filled cityscapes. " What we’re seeing is that people increasingly want to spend their tourist dollars by getting away from crowds and what they perceive as the increasingly polluted cities of the United States and Canada. Poles seem to suggest that tourists really do see a mountain vacation as a chance to breathe some clean air and experience a relatively untouched landscape and natural environment.” Recent evidence suggests it’s not just the “rare air” that an alpine excursion affords that is attracting more and more people “unto the hills”. Peter Fallow suggests it also has to do with growing resort developments on major ski slopes and mountain properties throughout the United States and Canada. ”While, on the one hand, North American vacationers seem to really appreciate the open spaces and clean air a mountain vacation offers, they also comment that new resort developments on many major mountain destinations throughout North America are attracting them. It seems they like the fact that they can have their cake and eat it too. Many mountain resorts today are more like full-fledged cities; with major internal infrastructure.” Fallow offers the Whistler/Blackcomb Resort of British Columbia as an example of this. ”Fifteen years ago Whistler/Blackcomb was relatively unknown outside of western Canada, today it offers not only an amazing array of ski runs and other mountain recreation, but its also offers a fully functioning resort village at the base of the mountain. Of course, this will only grow now that Whistler has been awarded the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. But what we’re seeing in Whistler is going on all over North America. We’re seeing major resort developments in Colorado, California, Wyoming, Tennessee, just to name a few.” Mountain vacation resorts are also a major draw because they offer a variety of recreational entertainment. Of course skiing and snowboarding together make up the bulk of mountain vacation recreation. Peter Fallow explains what are some other major draws for people getting away to the mountains. ”If you look at mountain resorts in the Tennessee and North Carolina Smoky Mountains for instance, it’s clear that these mountain destinations are popular for other reasons. There really is no skiing and snowboarding here whatsoever. Instead people are coming to experience the majestic mountain views, and to experience the comfort and luxurious hospitality of the mountain resorts located there. “ With these kinds of opportunities available to North American vacationers, its not surprising to see a growing trend in mountain holiday getaways. And according to Peter Fallow, its not likely this trend is going to shift anytime soon. ”As long as there is continued development in resorts in and around these mountain destinations, and as long as city-dwellers sense a need to “get away from it all” its very likely that mountain resort vacations will only grow in popularity in the years to come.” |
